Title
Role of neutrophils in cardiometabolic disease
Host
Alexandru Schiopu
Dr. Prabhakara Nagareddy is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC), USA. His research is broadly focused on elucidating the pathological influence of cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, high salt diet, rheumatoid arthritis, smoking etc on cardiovascular/cardiometabolic disease. For the past several years, Prof. Nagareddy’s group is specifically studying the role of neutrophil-derived alarmins such as S100A8 and S100A9, that are emerging as key signaling molecules in regulating inflammation both in acute and chronic conditions. They are also developing, validating, and repurposing certain FDA approved agents (e.g., Disulfiram, SGLT2 inhibitors) to reduce inflammation and improve outcomes in cardiovascular (e.g., atherosclerosis, heart failure) and metabolic diseases (e.g., diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance) by specifically targeting neutrophil secretome.
He has published several papers on the role of inflammation perpetuated by neutrophils both in acute (e.g. Myocardial Infarction) and chronic inflammatory conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Several of these papers are published in high impact journals such as Cell Metabolism, Circulation, Circulation Research, EHJ, JCI etc. His current research is mainly focused on identifying the cellular processes that regulate neutrophil production and their recruitment to the inflammatory sites in cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases. His recent work has identified a novel mechanism by which neutrophils reverse migrate to the bone marrow to influence the nature and magnitude of the ensuing inflammatory response post-MI.
Prof. Nagareddy’s talk will focus on defining the crucial role of neutrophils in instigating both inflammation and its resolution in cardiovascular disease. He will also talk about the potential pharmacological targets to regulate neutrophils behavior.
