Via extensive population-based studies Professor Groop hss shown that diabetes is far more complex than previously recognized. While diabetes has traditionally been classified into juvenile and adult-onset forms, Leif Groop has discovered several diabetes subtypes that do not fit into this simplt pattern.
Futhermore, Leif Groop has identified a series of genetic markers that can me employed for identification fo persons with increased risk for disease development.
Leif Groops discoveries have improved our knowledge of how diabetes develops and led to improved therapeutic prospects for many of today´s diabetics.
"- Thank you! I am of cours honored to receive this kind of Prize and being able to walk in the same footsteps as Jan Waldenström (I think he was the first to receive the Prize). It is an incredible appreciation of our work, but one should remember that it takes a team to create successful research. Moreover, I have the happiness of working at one of the world´s top diabetes research center; LUDC. But there is still much more to do to solve the riddle Type 2 Diabetes", says Leif Groop.
