If Sweden is to remain competitive on the global life science stage, the opportunities for turning research results into innovations providing growth and benefit for patients need to be improved. SIO Chronic Diseases will take national responsibility for coordinating, managing, and developing sustainable innovation structures in order to enable Sweden to reach its full potential in the life science area.
The programme will initially focus on the diabetes area, in which generic innovation processes that can be applied to other therapy areas will be developed.
Calls for proposals in the areas of prevention, diagnostics, therapy or devices within diabetes will open in early 2015. We are already preparing a smaller call, which we hope will open in the summer of 2014. Innovation projects from academia or start-up companies will be eligible to apply for support.
SIO Chronic Diseases, which involves a large number of actors from industry, health care, academia and innovation systems, will be coordinated by Lund University.
100 millions to strengthen the Swedish life science sector
The Swedish Innovation Agency, VINNOVA, has granted 100 MSEK to the Strategic Innovation Programme, SIO Chronic Diseases, with the overall aim to create better health and increased growth in Sweden.
