Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes

Symposium
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) mortality results from lung disease in the majority of cases. However, CF-related diabetes (CFRD) is the largest co-morbidity in the CF population and significantly accelerates lung decline. The exact cause(s) of diabetes in CF remains unclear. The overall objective of the work within CFRD-SRC is to provide fundamental insights into role of mutant CFTR in the pathogenesis of CFRD, as well as identifiying new therapeutic targets for the development of transformative treatments. The key aim to the CFRD-SRC is to address the role of CFTR in the endocrine and exocrine pancreas and at the interface between the two.

Speakers

Prof John Engelhardt, University of Iowa, US

"Modeling the Pathogenesis of CFRD in the Ferret"

Dr Anna Edlund, Lund University, SE

"Beta cell function in a mouse model of cystic fibrosis"

Dr Caitriona Kelly, Ulster University, UK

"Impact of short-term CFTR inhibition on islet morphology and function"

All speakers are members of the CF-Trust sponsored network CFRD-SRC headed from University of New Castle, UK (PI: J Shaw) and with members in Iowa (USA), Lund/Malmö, Stockholm and Szeged (Hungary).
