Bart Keymeulen, MD PhD, is professor of medicine at Brussels Free University (VUB), senior clinical investigator of Belgian scientific research fund-Flanders (Belgium) and head of the diabetes clinic with integrated research unit at UZ Brussel. After obtaining a PhD in medical sciences in Diabetes Research Center (prof. D Pipeleers) at Brussels Free University (VUB), he became head of the clinical trial section of the Center for Beta Cell Therapy in Diabetes, a European network of clinical and research departments, associated to reference centers and bioindustry partners. Major accomplishments are a prevention trial in recent-onset type 1 diabetic patients (B. Keymeulen et. al. NEJM 2005, Blood 2010, Diabetologia 2010) and an islet beta cell transplantation study in non-uremic patients (B. Keymeulen et. al. PNAS USA 2006) that was based on earlier observations in type 1 diabetic patients with a prior kidney graft (B. Keymeulen et. al. Diabetologia 1997). Bart Keymeulen is author of 124 publications in PubMed, mostly in the field of type 1 diabetes.
