Leif C. Groop Young Scientist Scholarship at Lund University

Professor Leif Groop has conducted diabetes research recognized on world-wide scale. This scholarship is awarded as a tribute to Professor Groop, and aims to inspire young diabetes researchers to reach for high levels of novelty, quality, impact and relevance in their scientific work.

The scholarship

A scholarship of 200.000 SEK is awarded with support of Novo Nordisk Scandinavia, and is intended to support research at Lund University. This scholarship will recognize excellent diabetes research by young scientists, making important scientific contributions to the understanding of diabetes and its complications. Such scientific advances will ultimately improve the situation for patients with diabetes, change clinical practice and prevent the disease from developing.


Eligibility: The researcher must be affiliated to Lund University and have concluded the Ph.D. degree no more than 8 years prior to the announcement of the scholarship.

The selection is based on the scientific excellence of the research proposal in the area of diabetes and is complications, and on the project’s feasibility assessed by access to required infrastructure, and the competence and merits of the applicant.

Call for applications

The call for applications is open from November to December, and will be publicly announced in February the following year. An award ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Diabetes Research Day, organized by the LUDC, typically the first or second week of February. The scholarship recipient will hold a lecture at this occasion on a topic relevant to the awarded research project.

Reviewing committee

Four experienced scientists on diabetes research appointed on a yearly basis from the Lund University Diabetes Centre, including the chair of the committee, and up to two representatives from Novo Nordisk Scandinavia.

The application should be submitted to Ulrika Blom-Nilsson (ulrika [dot] blom-nilsson [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se) and include the following documents:

1. Application form

2. Project proposal: maximum 5 pages including any figures and references, written using a legible font with size of at least 10 points. Sections must comprise aim(s), background, preliminary data, methods and study design, project time-line, budget, scientific novelty and significance for diabetes.

3. Two-page resume of the applicant.
