Importance of the trace element Selenium for a healthy living

Lutz Schomburg is professor of experimental endocrinology at the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology, Charité, Berlin, Germany. He is a world-leading expert in the role of selenium and selenoproteins in endocrine diseases and cancer. Prof Schomburg will address the history of selenium identification and research (which started at Gripsholm, Sweden), the identification of selenoproteins, related mouse phenotypes, the uneven distribution of selenium in the soils worldwide and the resulting health risks from too much or too little. He will further review some observational and interventional trials and latest development in the diagnostic of personal selenium status.
