Jacobæus symposium
The Jacobæus Prize is the oldest prize of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It was established in 1939 to commemorate the Swedish professor Hans Christian Jacobæus. The purpose of the prize is to promote medical research and is awarded annually to a distinguished international researcher who is invited to give a lecture on his or her research on a topic within physiology or endocrinology.
Programme
12.00 Registration
13.00 Introduction and welcome
Lena Eliasson, Lund University, and Per-Anders Jansson, University of Gothenburg
13.15 Prize ceremony
13.30 Prize lecture by Professor Hannele Yki-Järvinen, University of Helsinki
Title: "Why the liver? Lessons from a 43-year long detective-story"
Hannele Yki-Järvinen became professor in experimental internal medicine before turning 40 years old. The scientific production is stellar with > 400 publications in the very best journals in the metabolic field. Yki-Järvinen is a senior physician, endocrinologist and former head of the Diabetes Center at the University of Helsinki, thus a clinically active researcher like Jacobæus. Yki-Järvinen pioneered the critical role of fat accumulation in the liver for the metabolic syndrome and her current research addresses how diet and genes control the occurrence of liver steatosis in man. Yki-Järvinen's groundbreaking research on insulin resistance mechanisms in metabolic diseases has paved the way for novel treatments of patients with the metabolic syndrome and especially those afflicted with type 2 diabetes.

14.30 Lecture by Jan Borén, Professor and Director of the Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg
Title: “Insights into the pathophysiology of dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes”
Jan Borén's main long-term interest is lipid metabolism, and he has focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms leading to and consequences of lipid accumulation in the liver, arterial wall and heart, with the aim of translating this knowledge into effective treatment. Jan Borén's research program is translational and involves both in vitro and in vivo studies, including pathophysiological studies and mouse models, as well as kinetic studies in carefully phenotyped human volunteers.
15.15 Coffee/tea break
15.45 Lecture by Ruth Loos, Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Copenhagen, Denmark
Title: “The genetic contribution to obesity: from genes to biology and precision medicine”
Dr. Loos' research focuses on the etiology of obesity and the identification of genes and genetic loci that contribute to the risk of obesity and related traits. Her group studies refined adiposity phenotypes and biomarkers to target the deeper layers that define “obesity”. As a founding member of the GIANT (Genetic Investigation of ANTropometric traits) consortium, she has spearheaded many of the large-scale gene-discovery efforts. As more and more genetic variants are discovered, professor Loos examines whether genotype information can be used to identify subtypes of obesity, predict who is at risk of becoming obese, or prescribe tailored prevention and treatment strategies in the context of precision diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
16.30 Lecture by Philipp Kaldis, Lund University, Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö, Sweden
Title: “Metabolic remodeling during fatty liver disease”
Philipp Kaldis is a professor of metabolic disorders and liver disease at the Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö and the Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC). His research is focused on liver diseases, liver regeneration, liver cancer, and metabolism in human and mouse models using multi-omics (metabolomics, lipidomics, and transcriptomics) to provide a better understanding of liver disease & diabetes and open new avenues for therapeutic approaches.
After the symposium a light buffet will be served. Register for the event by sending an email to Ulrika Blom-Nilsson. Please let her know if you would like to register for the buffet.
